Welcome to Plum Presents Art Basel Miami Beach 2009, Day 3. In the first segment, Jennifer takes us through Gen Art’s Vanguard party where they teamed up with Aqua Art Miami in the Design District. We also see sculptures by acclaimed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama over at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, which will be on display until May 30, 2010.

We also sit down for an interview with Calvin Klein at The Setai and get up-close and personal famed artist, Shepard Fairey who, despite having his works on display inside the Convention Center, still believes in the importance of public art works.

In the first segment, hosts Jennifer Santiago and Mark Ellwood discuss how the economy has affected Art Basel Miami Beach by forcing the creators to scale down the actual fair without eliminating any of the glitz and prestige. Mark visits Design Miami, which celebrated its Vernissage before Art Basel’s for the first time in eight years. Jennifer and Mark also discuss the new additions to Art Basel Miami Beach 2009, including the W South Beach as a hub for this year’s cultural and social activities, as well as the new Oceanfront area (formerly the shipping containers) situated on Collins Ave.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2009: Shepard Fairey
Shepard Fairey, best known for his Obama Hope poster and OBEY Giant images, is a ubiquitous street artist who has been eagerly taken up by the mainstream commercial art market and art institutions in the last few years. At Art Basel Miami Beach, Shepard not only has work showing in the Convention Center with Deitch Projects, he's done multiple public installations. "Shepard Fairey: Public Works" produced by Country Club gallery in collaboration with the Fountainhead Residency and Miami Art Musuem is installed on shipping containers at 2700 NW 2nd Ave in the Wynwood District. The mural will stay pristine for the few days of the fair, before the security leaves and the taggers flock.
