Q: How long have you lived in the Hamptons, and what made you move here?

Carol Saxe: I moved to East Hampton eight years ago with my husband, two dogs and cat. My husband wanted a change in career and I wanted to live in an artists' community. We used to keep a sailboat out here. I have always been drawn to the water and wanted to live by it. The vibrant arts community here made it the right place. I have found wonderful opportunities here as an artist. I also find many people here who share my concerns for animals and the environment.

Q: What is your favorite medium to work in and how did your career begin?

Carol: My favorite medium is paint and I use acryllics because I am allergic to oil based paints. I also love to draw, but paint, particularly paint on canvas, is my preference. I paint pretty much every day.

Q: You became well known for your "dog art". How did that come about?

Carol: The "dog art" just sort of happened. I have two amazing dogs, Aspen and Vail. Aspen is an incredibly bright and sociable terrier mix who craved a canine social scene. So we would regularly go to the beach where she could interact with other dogs. I started to do paintings of the beach with dogs, no people, just dogs, playing, swimming, and sunning themselves.

In some ways, I think of these paintings as social commentary. More importantly, I hope my paintings will make people reflect on the humanity of dogs. I hope that in edition to enjoying these paintings visually, people will experience a change in their sensibility towards these animals and others.

I had been an active shelter volunteer before I moved here.I had adopted Aspen from the Bergen County Animal Shelter when she was six months old. When Aspen was about three we adopted Vail from NYC Animal Care and Control when he was eighteen months. I have always rescued dogs and see no reason to buy a dog when wonderful animals are being euthanized in shelters every day.

Q: What is your favorite thing about living in East Hampton?

Carol: I love living here; the beach, the bays, the views, the vineyards,  the openness, the architecture, ARF........... I could go on and on.
