Yoga on the Climbing Wall, 2009 Telluride Yoga Festival

The air was fresh. Wild flowers were peaking. Healthy and agile looking people wandered through town, practicing yoga on top of the climbing wall and in the park.

Every yoga class title was enticing. I could not resist "Jedi Training" with Jason Magness and I found myself on a wild ride of self exploration and endurance. Being a dancer, I really appreciated having Michael Franti's music to help me through the long poses. Thai Massage at the end of class was perfect and I left feeling lengthened, strengthened and intoxicated.

A little while later, I found Jason and Sam Salwei in Elks Park, doing a demonstration of Acro and Slackline Yoga. They invited everyone to try it out, and I accepted. Jason guided me with expert instruction and I was lifted upside down in the air. The world took on a new dimension of weightlessness and suddenly, I was dancing with the big blue Colorado sky. I continued to hang out in a euphoric state and watched as they played. Those yogis are tireless!

At dusk I took a Gondola ride over the mountain to enjoy a few hours of Kirtan. Singing, smiling and dancing felt good after the day. The mountain air soon became chilled, so I left before the Fire Dancer performed.

On Saturday morning I chose the class, "Purifying the Throat Chakra" with Tias Little. I thought that perhaps Tias could liberate my singing voice. We meditated, chanted, and watched an enlightening slide show. Tias guided us through a series of therapeutic and gentle movements as his three assistants moved quietly through the room making adjustments. I left feeling light and with a new awareness of my neck and shoulders.

The day ended with a free lecture by architect, entrepreneur, and most excellent yogi, Peter Sterios on "Bringing Yoga into The Home". I was inspired by his dedication to his practice.

On Sunday morning, the only “open level” workshop available was “Upside Down, Inside Out” with Noah Maze. I felt good as he explained that freedom is my original state. His head and handstand demonstrations were also elegant and inspiring. His detailed instructions bolstered my confidence, and standing on my head turns out to not be so difficult after all.

On Sunday afternoon, I ended up in Peter Sterios’s class, which is listed as “Cultivating a Home Practice for Growth”. With deep compassion he decided that a restorative class would be a better idea at the end of this 3-day festival. We moved through awesome stretches and the partner yoga was like getting a massage. A final repetitive movement lying on my back had me sliding around inside my skin in a really strange way. It was good though, and to my surprise, I was rejuvenated. Telluride has always been good to me, but this weekend was one to remember.
