The biggest attraction was the reenactment of the Butch Cassidy bank robbery in front of the Appaloosa Trading Company, which was the site of the original San Miguel Valley Bank. Telluride was the location of Butch's first bank robbery on June 24, 1889 when he and his gang made it out of town with about $20,000.
In Telluride, I think we look forward to any excuse to play in the streets! This new festival brought mining and blacksmith exhibitions and activities for children such as tug-of-war and make your own tipi. My daughter and I took a stagecoach ride around town, which is something you definitely can't do in Telluride everyday. The Heritage Festival is a nice tribute to a wonderful town with such a rich history.
