The main events were held in Town Park on the Bill Frisell Stage, named for the guest of honor, Bill Frisell Trio. For the second year in a row, the Jazz Celebration partnered with the Balloon Festival and even though the weather didn't cooperate, their was joy on all of the faces of the musicians, locals and tourists just happy to be in Telluride.
Mother Nature seemed have overlooked the beginning of the summer festivals as the temperatures stayed very chilly, cloudy, rainy and even a few snow flurries fluttering by in Town Park. This didn't stop the music or the attendees. While the musicians did what they could to stay warm, rubbing their hands together in between songs, the audience was huddled under blankets, dancing or even hula hooping.
This was my first time to attend the Jazz Celebration, and I think it is definitely the most laid back and relaxing of the summer fests. The fast and upbeat songs prompted many to get up and dance, and the slower, smooth songs would cause almost a hush of silence over the crowd, just enjoying the peace of the moment and the emotions of the music.
The line up included Rebirth Brass Band, Ozomatli, Donald Harrison Quintet, Lizz Wright and many others, with the Jimmy Herring Band closing the festival.
