Plum's Guide to booking your trip to Martha's Vineyard, via the Steamship Authority (a.k.a. The Ferry). Learn where to buy tickets, how long the trip will be and some of the amenities the Steamship Authority offers.

WHAT?

For newcomers and vacationers locals refer to the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamship Authority, as The Steamship Authority (SSA). SSA is the only ferry operator to carry automobiles to the island.

HOW LONG?

From Nantucket from the mainland terminal in Hyannis, Massachusetts, sailing time to Nantucket takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. Due to the length of the trip, a one hour, passenger-only catamaran service, is operated mid April through late December from Hyannis to Nantucket.

From mainland to Martha's Vineyard, sailing time is approximately 45 minutes to both Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs.
