This is your one-stop shop for how to get to Miami Beach, how to get around and quick tips for the savvy traveler. Find information on all of your transportation and general travel needs here.

Flying In

Traveling through the Miami airport is an experience. Brace yourself for abrasive crowds, sub-par food, shocking air-conditioning and a stunning display of inefficiency. Grin and bear it (it’s part of the Miami charm) or save a bit of sanity by flying into Fort Lauderdale International – it’s about a 40-minute drive from South Beach, but it can be worth it. Both airports are serviced by the major airlines.

If you're flying private, touch down at Homestead General Airport, Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport or Opa-Locka Executive Airport.

Motoring Around

Coming from the airport, cab it to the Beach (about $30 from MIA and $80 from FLL) and skip the car rental if you're in town for just a few days – once you’re on the island, most things are a short walk or cab ride away. If you're here for longer, you might want a car to head off-island.

Those who skip the car, but are itching for wheels can consider renting a bike or scooter – parking is easy and accessible. Otherwise, the South Beach Local is the best kept public transportation secret out there. The bus is clean, cheap ($.25), reliable (runs every 15 minutes) and makes a perfect loop from South Pointe Park to Lincoln Road.

Local Tips

We Miamians are notoriously bad and hostile drivers (worst road rage in the country two years running!). If you decide to rent a car, come prepared with defensive driving skills and lots of quarters – meter maids are everywhere here.

Pack light for your visit – clothing requirements are minimal and you can pick up most anything you need on the island. Drugstores, sundry shops and convenience marts are all over Ocean, Collins and Washington Avenues.
