Plum TV, the 24-hour television network of local channels serving
upscale resort communities, announced a definitive deal late last
week to acquire Telluride's Channel TV-13 from Stormy Mountain Broadcasting.
The station in Telluride marks the third Plum TV market in Colorado
joining ones in Aspen and Vail. Plum TV had its initial launch in
July 2004 with local channels in the Hamptons, Martha's Vineyard and
Nantucket.
"When we look at a market there's a lot of different criteria we
judge it by. Sometimes, if we're looking to buy, it's the quality
of the people running the exiting station. In this case we liked
the guys who are there," Plum TV CEO Tom Scott said.
"Secondly it's about the market itself. What can it bring from a
content perspective? What kind of town is it? How passionate are the
people in the town? I think Telluride fits all those criteria. It's
a place that has an interesting history and an interesting local
population. ... I lived on Nantucket for 17 years. I think people
who seek out these places, like Aspen and Telluride, and live there
on a year-round basis, require a certain kind of hardy soul," he
continued.
Plum TV, which stands out with its scrolling ticker of local
information on the bottom of the television screen, purchased
Channel 16, or TV-16 as it was named at the time of the sale, from
the Aspen Skiing Co. in 2005. Plum signed a 10-year marketing
agreement with SkiCo that gives it unique on-mountain access.
In Telluride, Plum TV will keep current shows such as "In Your
Backyard" and "Telluride Today," while also introducing new content.
Kiley Lane, host of several popular shows including "Telluride
Today," will remain at the station in her multi-faceted role as
editor, producer, writer and director, according to Plum.
Kiley has been on air at TV-13 since April 2005. In addition,
Telluride native James McCutcheon, director of operations for TV-13
for four years and an assistant coach for the Telluride High School
volleyball team, was named general manager.
Scott said Telluride will contribute content to its network of
channels with events such as its celebrated bluegrass and film
festivals. He added that Telluride is the type of place where
national advertisers might want to reach.
Plum TV's first channel was launched on Nantucket in 2002 by
Scott, who cofounder Nantucket Nectars juice company, Chris
Glowacki, a 10-year veteran of NBC and Carry Woods, producer of
the blockbuster films "Scream" and "Swingers."
Plum TV produces highly localized programming to some of the
nation's most-discerning audiences, and it strives to be an
incubator of groundbreaking new television programming. It's
stations share branding, which links them to the Plum network,
but each station provides original programming customized to
reflect each community. Plum expanded into the Hamptons and
Martha's Vineyard in 2004, and Aspen and Vail in 2005.
"Telluride is an amazing town. We will work hard to make
ourselves a positive part of the community," Scott said.
