On Wednesday, April 28, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced the federal government had approved a permit for Cape Wind Associates to build the first-ever offshore wind farm in the United States. This did not come as welcome news to everyone on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, two islands that abut the proposed 130-turbine project. In fact, the wind farm issue has been the subject of fierce debate for the past nine years. Plum spoke to the leaders of local groups both in favor and opposed to this controversial project.

The 3rd Annual Nantucket Walk Now for Autism Speaks raised over $300,000 for autism research and the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center. More than 800 people joined the walk with Autism Speaks co-founders Bob & Suzanne Wright along with their daughter Katie and grandson Christian. Christian was diagnosed with autism in 2004. The Wright's founded Autism Speaks in February of 2005.

A group of Nantucket's youth participated in the "Kids Share their Hearts with Autism Speaks" project by drawing pictures of unique hearts on canvases. Autism Speaks co-founder Suzanne Wright along with project organizer Bobbie Putterman shared their mission with the youth and helped raise awareness for autism. The project's in conjunction with the annual Nantucket Walk Now for Autism Speaks fundraiser. After the walk the canvases will be displayed throughout the island.

Chris Mason from the NHA joins Kate Brosnan to present this week's Artifact of the Week, which included: a piece of baleen and a Wright Whale carving. The NHA houses a multitude of whale artifacts and educated visitors about all different species of whales, of which many use baleen to catch food in their mouths as they move through the water.

The Nantucket Fire Department was granted $25,000 by Fireman's Fund. The grant went toward the purchase of new life saving tools. NFD afforded new car cutters, power generators, lift bags and equipment that will make responding to serious accidents faster and more efficient. Fire Chief Mark McDougall is excited because the new equipment is lighter and stronger, making first responders even quicker to the rescue.
